Railway Clubhouse is a social and vocational program that builds resilience and reduces isolation for those living with severe and persistent mental illness, providing support for their recovery.

With members and staff treated as equals, Railway Clubhouse builds a unique environment supporting recovery. It’s the peer support that separates Railway Clubhouse from other programs.

These accomplishments inspire members to stay on their path to mental health wellness, and they know they’re not alone in their efforts. We’ve also found that being part of a community helps members be more invested not only in their own recovery but in that of others. Members and staff share responsibility for all aspects of day-to-day operations. By sharing responsibility, members are more motivated to come in regularly.

What is a Clubhouse?

A Clubhouse is organized to support people living with mental illness. During the course of their participation in a Clubhouse, members gain access to opportunities to rejoin the worlds of friendships, family, employment, and education, and to the services and support they may individually need to continue their recovery. A Clubhouse provides a restorative environment for people whose lives have been severely disrupted because of their mental illness, and who need the support of others who are in recovery and who believe that mental illness is treatable.

How long do I need to stay at the Clubhouse?

It’s up to each individual member, however, the work of the Clubhouse cannot be done without member involvement.

How often do I need to attend?

Membership is voluntary and without time limits. There are no agreements, contracts, schedules, or rules intended to enforce the participation of members.

What kind of support can you expect from Railway?

Clubhouse members are considered colleagues with one another and staff. Staff assist Clubhouse members in operating the Clubhouse units, such as the business unit and health and wellness.

We have educational scholarships available, opportunities for employment ranging from just a few hours to full-time, and re-housing support. Your experience in the Clubhouse is as good as you make it. But we’re here to help you get started. We recognize the need to recover and support that process.

How do I become a member?

You can find an application on the website. Referrals can be made by family members, clinicians, and others in the community. Referrals can be by the person themselves as well. Walk-ins are welcome.

What do I do at the Clubhouse?

When you arrive as a new member, other members will help you get adjusted to the work-order day. Each member can choose a way to be helpful that day in the operation of the Clubhouse. If you come in but don’t feel well enough to participate, you are welcome to stay and find some peace in the midst of the activity. In the business unit, there are numbers to be collected, people to call, transportation to schedule and events to plan for. In the wellness unit, the members prepare and serve lunch, order food, make a plan for educational moments with other members in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and contribute to the community conversations when planning events.

How much does it cost to be a member?

There is no cost. Clubhouses are privately and publicly funded.
