Five Questions With… John German
An avid volunteer with organizations such as the Lions Club and Salvation Army in addition to Breakthrough, John sends us Notes of Hope every Monday through Saturday from his home in North Carolina. We’re so excited to introduce you to him and show you what makes him so special to us.
1. Tell us more about yourself.
I’m a computer programmer as well as a writer of poetry and screenplays. I’m a lifelong learner, and I want to spread love any way I can, whether that’s a sprinkle or a waterfall of love that can flow down into the hearts of many.
2. Why is our mission of helping others break through the cycle of poverty and mental illness so important to you?
Because no one should ever experience extreme poverty. If they do, we have an unwritten obligation to help them. Anyone who rises higher should reach back down to help others lift higher, because the more all lift higher, the more the world lifts higher.
3. Have you or someone you love ever been affected by mental illness or poverty?
I once slept out of my Jeep Wrangler—which I’ve since donated to charity—for 200 nights, fetching water from the local creek.
4. How does volunteering with Breakthrough make you feel?
Helping in any way is a tremendous present to unwrap, not only for one’s own existence, but more importantly for others who may need that help.
5. If someone asked you why they should volunteer at Breakthrough, what would you tell them?
Breakthrough is a tremendous organization that awakens the positivity and good life we can all have through helping others.
