Rosa looks to the future after her experiences with mental health challenges.

Rosa’s Journey To Recovery

I’ve had a very long journey with mental health challenges, made worse by substance abuse.
In 2000, my boyfriend at the time threatened to leave me and return to Mexico. As a result, I made a suicide threat to authorities and was hospitalized in Wichita, KS with a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and substance abuse.  They were the ones that recommended that I follow up with Breakthrough Clubhouse after my inpatient treatment.
In 2001, I became a member and have participated in transitional employment jobs, getting experience in the workforce in order to obtain longer-term employment.  The four jobs I had also helped me build skills I can use in my everyday life. I love volunteering, and because of the support of the Clubhouse, have had some success with my educational goals.
It’s such a positive environment and the Clubhouse has provided a safe place to engage during my recovery. I’m lucky to have lived with a family member who supported my recovery.  I believe that mental health treatment and substance abuse treatment are vital in the road to recovery, and my life is an example of how difficult this journey really is.
I’m so grateful for the help I’ve received.
