Dion’s Journey to Recovery
I moved from Long Beach, California to Wichita, Kansas when I was 13 years old. My dad had just passed away, and my mother had a friend in Kansas who could help her raise me and my siblings. Weighing only 2 lbs 2 oz at birth, I became legally blind as a child. I suffered from extreme anxiety and it was my mom who kept me alive, helping me find my way through school and finding a doctor who diagnosed my anxiety. She was everything to me – until she passed away. I was 30 years old and had relied on her for everything.
I’m very grateful for Breakthrough because if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have any place to go. Being a member gives me a purpose and something to learn. I like helping in the Clubhouse’s kitchen, cooking, and helping with the pantry. Socializing with my friends keeps me feeling calm. I don’t feel alone. I still worry about being isolated from others, but being at Breakthrough every day reminds me that I’ve made lots of friends. I especially like that we find ways to help each other.
Now is your chance to help others like Dion.
Please give now to our fundraiser Journeys to Recovery so we can continue to provide opportunities for those yearning for change.
