NBC World Series Honors Dedicated Breakthrough Wichita Volunteer

One of our long-time volunteers, Denise Hinson, recently received the 2023 NBC World Series (NBCWS) Terry Brewster Community Volunteer Award.

The award recognizes community volunteers for their commitment to improving the places in which they live, work, and play. These volunteers help at diverse non-profits across the area and have impacted the people around them in many ways.

Denise has served as a dedicated Breakthrough Wichita volunteer since 2002. She started providing support in our Representative Payee program and continues to this day, working weekly to help vulnerable individuals protect and utilize their meager income. These individuals live on an average of $750 a month and live with some form of disability. Her work directly impacts those who walk through our doors.

She has a huge heart and provides exceptional insight into the world of budgets for the impoverished, as well as offers sensible accounting principles for the organization. Denise uses her financial expertise to ensure that Breakthrough is a financially healthy social service agency. She knows our community relies on our doors being open for those who need help.

Denise has also served three terms on our Board of Directors, including as Board President and on the Finance Committee, providing continuity through the years with the board and staff.

Beyond offering financial advice to our clients and the organization, we rely on Denise to pick up the donated food from Dillons each week as well. She is happy to do even the small things that make our daily work easier.

We are lucky to have Denise’s expertise and wisdom as we live our mission to move individuals out of poverty and help others recover well while living with mental illness.

Congratulations, Denise, for this well-deserved recognition!
